Common and botanical names : Codonopsis root, Dang Shen
Renowned geo-specific habitat : Pingshun in Shanxi Province

Common Processing Techniques:
1)    To enhance the spleen enforcing property, especially to stop diarrhea, stir-fry using medium fire codonopsis (dang shen) slices with uncooked rice until slices change to a deeper color with a slight smoke appearing.
2)    To influence the lungs and enhance the phlegm reducing property, stir-fry using small fire, codonopsis (dang shen) slices with honey until the slices are non-sticky to touch.

Simple and effective combinations (for 2-3 persons):
1)    For convalescence individuals lacking in appetite and vitality, use codonopsis (dang shen) (60g), astragalus (bei qi) (60g), red dates (hong zao) (20pieces), lily bulbs (bai he) (40g), black beans (hei dou) (100g) and half a free-range chicken to simmer for 3 hours. Take 2-3 bowls daily at any time, three times weekly.
2)    For prolonged lingering cough that refused to go away, giving rise to feeble voice and tiredness, use codonopsis root (dang shen) (60g), Glehnia root (bei sha shen) (60g), poria (fu ling) (30g) and licorice (gan cao) (20g) to simmer in 10rice-bowls of water until 5 bowls remain. Take 2 bowls daily after meals, twice weekly until the problem is resolved.
Advanced and modern applications:
Concentrated codonopsis (dang shen) drink has been used as an adjunct supplement for cancer patients going through chemotherapy or radiation. It brings up the red blood count to prevent anemia and also increase the white blood cells to support immunity.
