The Classics revived, enjoy the Nostalgic Journey of Taste with Us.
Once an icon of incomparable elegance from the remnants of an era, and a pride that relishes the fond memories and culture of the Chinese, Great Southern rightfully carved a superior standing for itself.
Once a legend, as told by countless elders who reminisced with great affection the delightful fables from its celebrated days, Great Southern notably conjured up a curiosity for enchantment.
During the period of British colonialism, the Chinese were often and unfairly denied entry into foreign hotels and restaurants. Imbued with a strong passion to exonerate from this discrimination, the second-generation heir to the Eu Yan Sang legacy, Eu Tong Sen, with great pride founded and opened Singapore’s Great Southern Hotel back in the 1930s. At that time, it was the tallest building in Chinatown and the first to be built with an elevator, creditably earning it the unparalleled reputation as the “Raffles Hotel of Chinatown.” Its fifth floor had housed the famous Great Southern Restaurant, a glorious social sanctuary amongst the Chinese of that time. It frequently played host to well-groomed writers, celebrities and business tycoons who had gathered there to enjoy many toasts, while gently savoring the delicacies in an exuberant ambience of bliss and beauty.
Great Southern revives the classics, paying homage and deep reverence to the weathered but treasured tenacity of the Southern ancestry.
