From Bulging to Better: A Checklist for Vein Relief
What are Varicose Veins?
- Due to weakened vein walls and damaged valves in the lower limbs, blood was prevented from flowing efficiently back to the heart, causing veins to appear bluish/purple, bulging, and twisted
- In TCM, Varicose veins are called “Jin Liu”, caused by deficiency in Qi and Blood stagnation, leading to blockage of meridians
- Causes: Prolonged standing and sitting, pregnancy, old age, genetics
Prevention and Care
- Good lifestyle Habit: Avoid prolonged sitting and standing, occasionally raise lower limbs (3-5 mins)
- Appropriate amount of exercise: Simple exercises, e.g. stand on tiptoes (3-5 mins) to stimulate contraction of lower limb muscle, supporting back flow of blood
- Weight Control: Reduces the pressure on veins of lower body
- Wear suitable footwear: Able to apply appropriate pressure to stimulate blood back flow
- Avoid soaking feet in hot water: Worsens condition by increasing blood flow to lower limbs
